🧪 What is Uranium Glass & Why Is It Called Vaseline?
Uranium glass dates back to the early 19th century, with the first known production by Josef Riedel in Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic) around the 1830s–1840s. Uranium was added in oxide form to melted glass mixtures, creating brilliant yellow-green hues that fluoresce intensely under UV light. The practice spread throughout Europe and America, especially in Victorian and Art Deco periods.
The term "Vaseline glass" originated in the United States. American collectors in the early 20th century noticed that certain yellow-green translucent glassware resembled the look of petroleum jelly (Vaseline). While all Vaseline glass is uranium glass, not all uranium glass is Vaseline — the name refers specifically to its pale yellow appearance.
